Devotional: Politically Incorrect

"It happened that when He went into the house of one of the leaders of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat bread, they were watching Him closely. And there in front of Him was a man suffering from dropsy. And Jesus answered and spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?" But they kept silent. And He took hold of him and healed him, and sent him away. And He said to them, "Which one of you will have a son or an ox fall into a well, and will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?" And they could make no reply to this."
‭‭Luke‬ ‭14:1-6‬ ‭NASB‬‬

Have you ever noticed how politically incorrect Jesus is?  The Pharisees had their code of laws that they expected everyone to abide by.  If you didn't, then watch out!  They had zero tolerance for those who were politically incorrect.

So they had a law about healing someone on the Sabbath Day.  You couldn't do that because that constituted work and no one was allowed to work on the Sabbath Day.  That was politically incorrect!

Notice how they stood around just waiting for Him to violate their rules!  I just love Jesus's response.  He asks them a question that would trap them either way.  "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?"  If they said, "Yes."  They would be politically incorrect and violate their own rules.  But if they said, "No", they would look like the heartless men that they really were.  Oh, my!  What a spot to be in!

So Jesus heals the man and then He renders them speechless by asking which one of them would not lift his son or ox out of a well if they had fallen in on a Sabbath Day.  I don't know about you, but I really get a kick out of how Jesus handles the Pharisees.

Jesus marched to the beat of a different drum much to the dismay of the Pharisees.  He marched to the beat of His Father's will.  As Jesus' Followers, we are to march to the beat of our heavenly Father's will too.  It's not exactly politically correct to be a Biblical Christian these days, but that's what we are called to do.  Are you ready to rise to the challenge?
