Marsha's Musings: Earthly Priests Are Imperfect (Hebrews 5:1-4 NKJV)

For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness. Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for himself, to offer sacrifices for sins. And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was. (Hebrews 5:1-4 NKJV)

Earthly priests are not perfect. They must offer sacrifices for their own sin as well as the sin of the people.

Their sacrifices could never truly atone for sin. That's why they had to do them over and over again.  Seems like it would have been a hopeless repetition.

That's what makes Christ as our high priest truly unique. He only had to atone for the sins of His people one time. He is a priest forever, meaning no other priests need to take His place because He lives forever to make intercession for us. We see that elsewhere in Hebrews.  What a comfort this is!
