Marsha's Musings: God or Cosmic Genie? (Hebrews 2:10, 11 ESV)

For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, (Hebrews 2:10, 11 ESV)

Everything, according to verse 10, exists for God and by God.  That means we exist and are alive because God willed it and it means He brought us into existence for His own purposes because we exist for Him.

This is a repugnant idea to many.  It means that we are here for God's purposes and will.  He can do as He sees fit with His creation.  

We want it to be the other way around.  We want God to serve our purposes.  We have our to-do list for God and expect Him to fulfill all our wishes like some cosmic genie or Santa Claus.  TV preachers preach that God is here to fill your pockets with money if you just have enough faith.  Hogwash!

Sometimes God does see fit to give us what we ask for, but sometimes He doesn't.  It all depends on what His will is for our lives.  He has a bigger purpose in mind for us...that we would grow spiritually in the graces and fruits that glorify His name.
