If you have read Paul's other letters in the New Tesatement, then you will know what he refers to when he says to "hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me..." This is why it is important to be reading the Bible regularly.
Hold fast. Strongs Concordance says this can mean "4) to hold one's self to a thing, to lay hold of a thing, to adhere or cling to". We are to cling to what Paul teaches in Scripture---like a barnacle clings to a rock!
Notice we don't have to cling to the Rock by our own strength. We do it by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us!
