Knowledge that is too Wonderful & High for Me, Part 2

Knowledge that is too Wonderful & High for Me; Part 2
by Marsha Iddings

Psalm 139:6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it.

Last time we looked at the first part of Psalm 139 which focuses mainly on the fact that God is all-knowing. This time we focus on verses 7-12.

Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me.
If I say, "Surely the darkness shall fall on me," Even the night shall be light about me;
Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, But the night shines as the day; The darkness and the light are both alike to You.

Here we see that God is omnipresent. He is everywhere at all times. It is impossible for us, as mere humans, to wrap our brains around this concept. We are bound by space and time. But God is not bound by time and space.

I like to think of it in terms of a box. We live inside a box with boundaries and walls but God lives outside the box and is not bound by the walls of time and space. Not only does God live outside the box but He lives inside the box as well. He fills all. Paul's letter to the Ephesians says it so well:

Paul prays that...
"The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all." (Eph 1:18-23)

The Greek meaning of the word filleth literally means to cram. The picture is of something being full to the top with no space left over. Weymouth's New Testament says, "... the completeness of Him who everywhere fills the universe with Himself."

It doesn't matter where you are, how far you run from Him, or where you hide, God is there. He sees everything you do. He knows every thought in your mind. You are never out of His reach.

The implications of this are great. For those who do not come to God through the shed blood of Jesus Christ on their behalf, this can be a source of fear as they either try to hide from God anyway, or attempt to gain merit with Him through their own righteous works. For those whose sins are covered by the blood of Jesus Christ, this knowledge is a source of great comfort.

It is comforting to know that whatever happens in my life, God has already gone ahead of me and He knows what is coming. He isn't surprised by anything. He has it all under control and will use whatever comes at me to sanctify me and grow me up spiritually. All things work together for good to those who love God and are the called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)
