Marsha's Musings: Beware of Strange Doctrines! (Hebrews 13:9 NKJV)

Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them. (Hebrews 13:9 NKJV)

The Geneva Study Bible says this:

Verse 9
Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. 6 For [it is] a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with d meats, which have not profited them that have been eoccupied therein.

(6) He speaks to those who mixed an external worship and especially the difference of meats with the gospel which he clearly condemns as repugnant to the benefit of Christ.

(d) By this one form which concerns the difference of clean and unclean meat, we have to understand all the ceremonial worship.

(e) Who observed the difference of them superstitiously.

Apparently this goes back to the issue of clean or unclean meat as it pertains to the Mosaic ceremonial law. There were those in the church who were converted from Judaism and insisted on bringing the ceremonial food laws into their Christianity.  They were making up various and strange doctrines and adding it to their Christian worship and teaching.

It's an issue of law and grace.  Today we have various groups trying to bring their strange doctrines into the church and binding people to obey them.  Bottom line, if the whole of Scripture does not teach it, then it's not a binding law of God.  God has saved us from the curse of the law and has given us grace.  Many of these groups twist Scripture to fool people into thinking what they are teaching is in the Bible.  Always look up all Scripture they use to proof text their teaching.  Read all the verses surrounding it to get the true meaning of what it is saying.  Many times you will find they have pulled verses out of context and built a strange doctrine from it.  BEWARE!
