Marsha's Musings: Think Before You Expect To Understand

Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything. (2 Timothy 2:7 ESV)

This is a no brainer, but a point where many trip up when it comes to Bible study and application of Scripture to one's life.  Many forget the one little word at the beginning.  THINK.

Thinking about Scripture involves work.  It involves looking up related passages. It might involve using some study tools. It might involve time.  Often we are too busy for all that, so we just read a verse and maybe someone else's opinion about it and off we go.

It reminds me of a popular saying within one of America's well known religions.  It goes. like this:

"When the prophet speaks, the thinking has been done."

Many churches operate like this. The pastor won't entertain any questions and if you do question him he says you are not submitting to authority. Basically, when he speaks the thinking has been done. It's cultish.

I'm so thankful for a pastor who is willing to allow for questions and even a difference of opinion when it is not a doctrinal essential to salvation.

Thinking about what we read in the Bible is essential to understanding it. We must take the time to think if The Lord is to give us understanding.  Don't skip that first wod in the verse.
