Marsha's Musings: Stewards of Truth

My Quiet Time:

As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith. (1 Timothy 1:3, 4 ESV)

Good warnings for all of us.

1. Don't teach anything other than what's in the Bible

Many get carried off adding their own doctrines to Scripture.  They do this by taking Scripture out of context, or finding obscure passages that may not have clear meaning and adding their own to it.

2. Don't be devoted to myths

How often do we get carried away with posts on Facebook or emails  that turn out to be myths...urban legends...and we get caught up in the emotions of it and reposting or sending it along.

Or how about horroscopes? Do read your's faithfully and take it seriously?  It's a myth!

3. Don't be devoted to genealogies

There is nothing wrong with researching your families roots to learn what you can about your family history. But when this becomes important for religious reasons, then it's wrong.  You can not improve your ansestors's outcome in the after life by anything you do here.  The Bible says, "...it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment..." (Hebrews 9:27)

What your relatives have done on earth will be judged by God.  You can't add anything to it.

Why do we have these warnings? Because they promote speculations, most of which are false and move you away from the stewardship God has called you to...being stewards of the truth by faith.
