Bless his heart, he tried. Monday he struggled to get a ladder up on their side of the fence and a cord over the fence so he could use the electric chain saw he bought at a garage sale.
That turned out to be an exercise in futility. The chain saw is not sharp and would not cut even a small branch without much effort.
So we decided to try the pole pruner to at least get some of the smaller stuff cut off. That too turned out to be an exercise in futility. The pole pruner broke.
He gave up for the day and started back at it with the hand trimmers yesterday. I thought he would just stand up on the bank above the railroad tie retaining wall and cut what he could reach without the ladder. But when I heard the sickening crash of the ladder I knew I was wrong.
He lost his balance and fell off the ladder sending it over the edge of the retaining wall. He doesn't remember if he went over the edge of the wall or just fell on the upper level. By the time I got back there he was standing up trying to cut more but complaining that he was hurting. He had a gouge on his forehead, was scraped down the shin of one leg, and multiple scrapes in other places and he feels like he has pulled a muscle in his calf. He doesn't remember standing up and trying to cut more. That was an exercise in futility as well.
I have to give him credit for determination. When he decides he is going to do something he doesn't easily give up.
