Points of Reveiw
The author of Hebrews has always used the OT to bring forth truths of Scripture.
He begins Hebrews by saying revelation was incomplete until the time of Christ. He completed it.
Jesus had to be tempted in order to be able to stand before God as our sacrifice.
We are reminded in chapter 4 that we are to fear God.
The temple and temple sacrifices are no longer in effect. A new covenant will be written on your hearts and placed in your minds.
Over and over in greater detail God reveals His plan. Every aspect of creation was made to do what it was supposed to do. Man was to tend the earth and worship God. Disobedience came and man because of sin is unable to perform that duty. The covenant of works.
The covenant of grace....the promised seed that a Saviour would come to correct this breach in creation. God promised it and that is grace.
What is the ultimate end of all of this?
They will be my people and I will be their God. That is the point of entering God's rest. We would glorify God by being His people.
The covenant of redemption was before the foundation of the world.
The Trinity was there before creation and ordained that the Son would redeem His people.
The OT covenant had to come to an end.
Chapt 9:1
The first covenant had regulations of divine worship. We are called to remember Christ by hearing his words in preaching, the Lord's supper and baptism. We are to contemplate these things.
V.1 There was a holy place but it was a worldly holy place. He talks about the tabernacle that Moses established in the wilderness. It was a tent. There was nothing unworldly about it. It was made by men. God made it holy.
In the tent there were two sections. An outer section and an inner section.
Outer section: Routine rituals of the priest were held here. The shewbread was here. Shewbread means bread of face or presence. It shows the presence of God. The Word of God is our "bread". It was just bread but God made it holy for its purpose. Exodus 25-26
Inner section: Divided from the outer by a vail. It was the holy of holies. This is where the ark of the covenant was and the rod that budded, the pots of manna, the ten commandments, golden sensor.
This is where the high priest went once a year to offer sacrifice to atone for the sins of Israel. He had to atone first for his own sins.
Only the priests were allowed to touch and use the golden sensor. King Uziah was struck with leprosy because he took the golden sensor to use it. Korah and his band wanted to offer incense and brought their sensors and the earth swallowed Korah and his band.
Israel continued to rebel even after Korah was swallowed up. Israel blamed Moses for killing Korah. They were all to bring their staff, one for each tribe of Israel. The one whose staff buds is the one God called to be priest. Aaron's staff budded. God was saying Aaron was his priest. It's not some mere office. It's central to the covenant of grace in the OT. He stands before God to make an offering for God's people.
v. 5 The author glosses over the cherubim of glory. We all want to know about them. He basically says they are not important when he says we cannot now speak in detail on this.
The Holy Spirit is behind all of this.
V. 9 This was a figure. When we see the OT types and shadows it's because the Holy Spirit shows us it is there.
Even though the sacrifices were set apart as holy that was all they were...just sacrifices. There was nothing magical. They were symbolic and did not change anything physically. Psalm 51:16-17
V.11 The tabernacle that Christ had was His physical body that He had on this earth. His body is not corrupted by original sin. His body was made by the conception of the Holy Spirit.
Christ entered once in the true holy of holies. He doesn't need to go back day after day. This makes the redemption eternal.
v. 10-11 If all the sacrifices was sufficient for the sins of the people, how much more does the sacrifice of Jesus atone for the sins eternally?
Observations:
1. What God's word calls holy is indeed holy.
The word of Christ Jesus alone is holy.
2. The word of the holy spirit is critical not only in revelation but in redemption. Isa 11; Ps 45:6-7;
3. Dead works can not serve the living God. People who are dead in sin can not serve the living God.
