Growing Stuff Without Bugs and Dirt

I love growing stuff but I hate digging in the garden, dealing with bugs and all that.  I like lettuce.  I like to throw a hand full of lettuce into my smoothies.  I like a lettuce salad and I like lettuce in sandwiches and hamburgers.

So I bought three of these self-watering greenhouse trays.  I grow my lettuce right in it.  I don't even bother to transplant it in the garden area (actually a weed bed now).

I plant one full of lettuce seeds.  When they are up and growing, then I plant the second tray with more lettuce.  When it's up and growing I will plant the third one.

These are self watering trays.  I need that mercy because I forget to water.  I start them out with plain water until the seeds are sprouted.  After they sprout I use a mixture of 1 gallon of water to 1 tsp of Miracle Gro, 1/4 tsp of calcium chloride and 1/4 tsp of epsom salts.  I mix that up real good and then as I need to add water to the greenhouse, I use this to feed the plants.  It's basically hydroponics on a small scale.

I keep the green house on my south window sill in the basement until the lettuce is big enough to start using.  Then I bring it upstairs to my kitchen herb window where it is handy to cut.

I love this because there are no bugs, and no dirt.  I don't even have to wash the lettuce before I use it!

I can buy peat pots to replace used ones, so I can use these greenhouses over and over until I wear them out.
