Devotional: The Faithful God

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations, (Deuteronomy 7:9 ESV)

In these days of tight finances, high medical bills, and uncertainty, the theme of God's faithfulness keeps popping up.  I'm reading through the Bible chronologically this year and just finished the part in Deuteronomy where Moses recounts all the wanderings in the wilderness and God's faithfulness to the Children of Israel during that time.

It is significant to me that God did not make life easy for them.  They still dealt with very tough times, but God was faithful to bring those through the tough times who were obedient to Him and kept His commandments.

So often Christians want to claim God's promises but fail to be obedient to His word.  Then they wonder why God doesn't uphold His end of the bargain.

As Christians it is our duty to read the Word of God and find out what we are supposed to be doing in obedience to Him.  Salvation is free apart from any works on our part, but God doesn't save us so we can go on living according to our own whims and fancies. We are saved apart from works, but we are saved to work.  We can't expect God to show His faithfulness to us if we are not being faithful to Him.

Life is tough.  The Children of Israel had it tough in the wilderness.  God promises us that He will be faithful to us IN our trials and tough times. No where in the Bible does it say God will remove the trials and tough times if we are faithful to Him. We live in a fallen world and there is not escape from trials in this life. The tough times are what strengthen our faith and spur us to learn more heavily on God's faithfulness.

Are you going through some tough times?  Lean in close to the Saviour with me.  He will be faithful to us through the tough times as we are faithful to Him.
