Hidden Treasures: A Cloud of Witnesses

Hebrews 12:1  Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us...

When I've looked at this verse I've often focused on the part about laying aside every weight and sin and forgot about the first part.

Paul says we have a cloud of witnesses who have gone on before watching our manner of life and conduct.  I don't know if he means this literally, such that we can build a doctrine around it, or if he means this in a figurative sense.  Whatever the meaning, we should live our lives as if we are being observed by others at all times.

We are being observed by God at all times.  This should give us more motivation than even a cloud of witnesses that have gone on before!
