What was the purpose of a priest? Their purpose was to offer sacrifices for the sins of the people each day. Before Christ came and offered Himself as the supreme sacrifice for sin, these people showed their faith in God to forgive their sins by the symbolism of the sacrifice that the priest offered for them. It was a picture or foreshadow of what was to come---Christ coming to offer the final sacrifice for sin for all time.
Hebrews 10:12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God.Christ is both our High Priest and our sacrifice for sin. So what is the purpose of priests in churches today? The book of Hebrews is clear that there is no need for the earthly priesthood today. He is our Priest and His office does not change due to the death of the priest because He lives forever. Therefore there is no need for another priest. They can not take away sins by the rituals that they do. We see that in our verse in Hebrews. If Christ is our High Priest that never dies, there is no need for another to take His place. So why do they try to take His place anyway? It is indeed a puzzle to me.
