Col 2:13-15 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
Dead! I had no power to choose Christ. God had to make me alive by changing my heart so that I could choose Him. Without this work of grace in the heart, no man would choose to come to Him. God gets all the glory and credit for my salvation. I have no room to boast that I chose to be a Christian apart from God's grace having changed my heart and mind.
There was a time when I did boast that I had chosen to accept Christ as my Savior and therefore knew that I was going to spend eternity in heaven. As I look back on that day, I am ashamed of how it sounded to my friend. It sounded so "holier than thou" and I'm afraid he may have taken it that way too. I must boast only in the grace of God that changed my heart and caused me to come to Christ. Without that, I would still be lost in my sin.
