Devotional: Our Great God

1Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
13 ¶ I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate,
14 that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ's appearing,
15 which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords,
16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.

Our God is a great God.  Here in these verses we learn a few things about Him.  He is the blessed and only Potentate.  Another word for Potentate is Sovereign.  He is the only Sovereign, meaning there are no other Gods.  He is the only One.

He is the King of Kings.  Albert Barnes commentary says, "Who claims dominion over all the kings of the earth. In Revelation 7:14, the same appellation is applied to the Lord Jesus, ascribing to him universal dominion."

He is the Lord of lords.  Again, Albert Barnes says, "The idea here is, that all the sovereigns of the earth are under his sway; that none of them can prevent the accomplishment of his purposes; and that he can direct the winding up of human affairs when he pleases"

He alone has immortality.  He has always existed and always will exist.  He is exempt from death.

He dwells in unapproachable light.  Revelation 21:23-24 and 22:5 says that heaven does not need the light of the sun or the moon or stars. God dwells in this place of light so brilliant that human eyes could not endure it.

No mortal man has seen God or can see Him.  John 1:18 tells us, "No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him."

He is to be honored for His great power.  Sadly, many don't recognize this today and in fact many are down right hostile when His name is mentioned.  But one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Isaiah 45:23 I have sworn by Myself; The word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness, And shall not return, That to Me every knee shall bow, Every tongue shall take an oath.

Romans 14:11 For it is written: "As I live, says the LORD, Every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall confess to God."

Philippians 2:10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,

Each person will bow the knee and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.  The question is when? Will you do it now or will you be forced to do it at the judgment?

Those reading this who have already confessed Christ as Lord, can take comfort in the things written here about God.  He is indeed all powerful and Sovereign over all.  What comfort in troubled times this is!
