Galatians 2:21 "I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain."
(NKJV)
The Apostle Paul sums up what he has been hammering home in this chapter. If we can make ourselves righteous and worthy by adhering to religious rites, traditions, commandments, sacraments and religious laws, then Christ died in vain. There was no purpose for His death.
The whole point is that we can not in any way earn merit with God. We can not in any way make ourselves worthy before Him by anything we do. It is impossible. He demands a perfect sinless sacrifice and we are not sinless. The only perfect sinless sacrifice for sin was Jesus Christ. That is the only righteousness God can accept on our behalf. To think we can pull ourselves up by our own boot straps and make ourselves worthy before God is to say the shed blood and death of Jesus Christ is not sufficient. What an insult to Him!
