Marsha's Musings: Are We All God's Children?

There are churches that teach that all of mankind are the children of God.  They say we are all God's children.  They make no distinction between believers and non-believers in Jesus Christ and His sacrificial death for sinners.  However, if it is true that all people are God's children, then the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ was for no purpose.  Why would He need to bother to die for us if we are all already His children?  You see, the Bible paints a different picture.  Here is what the Bible says:

1 John 3:10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

We see in these verses that some people are the children of the devil.  This means that not all of us are God's children.  The reason Christ died on the cross for us is shown in the verses below:

Galatians 4:4-7 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!" Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

We were by nature sinners because we were the children of the devil before . We were under the law of sin and death.  But Christ died to redeem us from that slave market and from being the children of the devil that we would be adopted and become God's children.  This is a glorious truth!  See how the doctrine that we are all God's children obscures the reason for Christ's death and shed blood on the cross for us?  Let's not obscure the reason Christ came by telling people we are ALL the children of God.  This is a lie of the devil.

Are you a true child of God?  Who is your father?  If you answer, God, on what basis is He your Father?  If you answer that God is your Father on the basis of Christs shed blood and death on the cross to pay for your sin and cover you with His righteousness, then you are an adopted child of God. Welcome to the family.
