Lamentations 3:22 It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, there was the temptation by many to protect God's reputation. There were those who said, "God didn't have anything to do with this. This is all the work of Evil."
The loss of life was great. Those who lost loved ones still suffer that loss to this day. Our nation still grieves over what happened there. The temptation was and is great to say that it was unfair.
In the first case above, when it is said that God didn't have anything to do with 9/11 they have in effect said that God is a weak God. He is not in control of His creation. All He can do is sit by and wring His hands as Evil runs its course.
In the second case above, when it is said that God has acted unfairly, people are attempting to hold God to their standard of judgment. They have predetermined in their minds how God should act and be instead of taking their ideas to the bar of Scripture and letting God be God.
The worst injustice of all was when God gave His own Son, Jesus Christ to die on the cross for the sins of men and women. One Man took the punishment for all our sins so that we could be made right with a Holy God instead of spending a Christ-less eternity in Hell. Was that fair? It was mercy.
The verse above says it is because of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed. The tragedy of 9/11 should be a reminder to us of this. Luke 13:4-5 says, "Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish."
