Devotional: Numbering Days & Redeeming Time

Numbering Days & Redeeming Time

by Marsha Iddings

Psalm 90:12 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

Ephesians 5:16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

As the mental fog lifts and the headache pain subsides I am reminded once again of the importance of using my time wisely. The last five days have been days of headaches, brain fog, and chronic fatigue. Every day has been an effort to get through and every chore has been an effort to do. But I am thankful to God for His mercies and that He has seen fit to lift the fog, fatigue and pain.

I am realizing how much I take for granted when I have a string of mostly good days like I have had for the last three months. It's so easy to put things off that need to be done and say, "Oh, I'll do that some other time. I'm having too much fun right now." Scripture says to redeem the time because the days are evil. I need to take advantage of those good days and do those things that need to be done because I don't know when "evil" will befall me next and I won't be able to do them or they will have to be done with great effort.

Teach us to number our days. Why? That we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. How many good days will I have? I do not know. So, I need to take advantage of them when I have them and use them wisely when I am feeling good.

How many good days do you have? You may be perfectly healthy and feel that you will be that way for the rest of your life. That may be true, but you don't know when the rest of your life is going to be over. It may be tomorrow. So, even as a healthy person, you need to heed God's commands to number your days and redeem the time. Don't leave undone those things that are most important. Most important of all is making sure of your soul's eternal destination.

Scripture says in Hebrews 9:27, "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:" There are only two options on that day.

1.)Matthew 25:34 "Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:" or

2.) Matthew 25:41 "Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:"

How will you fare? If you are not sure, Romans 10:13 can help. "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
