Devotional: Fenced Up and In the Dark

Job 19:8 He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he hath set darkness in my paths.

In reading through the book of Job recently, I came across the verse above in Job 19:8. It is Job speaking. This is the picture of a person who is overwhelmed. He feels like he is in a dark tunnel and can't see the end in sight. Ever been there before? I know I have many times.

But as I pondered this verse, I had a light bulb moment. The "He" Job talks about here is God. It is God that has fenced up the way and set darkness in the path!

At first glance it would seem that there is no hope here, but there is a lot of hope in this verse. If God is the one who fences up our way and sets darkness in our paths, this means He is in control of the situation. It's not just a random circumstance causing us trouble, God has done it. If God has done it then he has a good purpose in mind for it. Romans 8:28-29 tells us,
"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren."
This is very encouraging to me as various trials come my way to impede my progress toward things I want to do or am trying to do. God knows all about it because He is the one Who set up the road block. In His time He can remove the fence and the darkness, how and when He knows. I just need to ask for His grace to behave as His child in the mean time.
