Marsha's Musings: Obedience & Submission to Spiritual Leaders (Hebrews 13:17 NKJV)

Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you. (Hebrews 13:17 NKJV)

This is talking about church leaders who rule according to the word of God.  God would never have us obey a leader who would have us do something contrary to His Word as revealed in the pages of the Bible.  That being said, it is important that we obey and submit to good leadership in our churches.  This does not mean we obey blindly.  The Bible tells us to search the Scriptures to be sure what we are being taught lines up with what the Bible says.

Good leaders are watching out for our souls.  They must give an account one day before God for how well they did this.  Our actions do matter.  If we are rebellious, they will give an account with grief to God.  It says that would be unprofitable for us if we have been disobedient and unsubmissive.  How?  It's not as if God doesn't already know how we have acted before they give their report.  It would be unprofitable because we must also give account for how we lived our lives and we will be judged by God.  If we have not done well, all those works that are wood, hay and stubble will be burned.  What kind of a report do I want my church leaders to give about me?  I need to remember I'm obeying to please God first and foremost.
