Marsha's Musings: What Women Are Supposed to Do

My Quiet Time:

Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control. (1 Timothy 2:11-15 ESV)

Oh, boy.  There are a lot of women out there who do not like these verses.  Women's lib (or lip as I like to call it) has really done a number on people.

Let's face it, women tend to want to say a lot of stuff that they should just keep themselves.

In Genesis, we learn that it was the woman who fell for Satan's tricks.  Then she persuaded Adam to follow suit.  She basically took the leadership role instead of conferring with with Adam first and then following his lead.  Look what a mess it created.

So I think Paul in this passage urges the women to be submissive to their husbands  (not doormats) and to learn in the public assembly quietly.

There are some who take issue with female Sunday school teachers in the church.  These scriptures teach that a woman should not teach or usurp authority over a man.  It does not say it is wrong for a woman to teach the children or other women of the church.

I do think there is a great danger in women's Bible and book studies and prayer meetings, however, for the conversation to digress into gossip.  Women are so good at couching gossip under the guise of a prayer request.  I know.  I've done it.

I also think that womens groups can easily become a hot bed for dissention within the church. I've seen that happen as well.

Let's just face it.  We women just have a problem controlling our tongues and I am not exempt.  We need to be very careful.
