Sermon Notes for Ecclesiastes 7

>
> M. Kelly, August 25, 2013
> Romans 8:28 God causes all things to work together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.
> It's not that all things are good but God causes them to be used for good.
> Eccl. is a book about reality. It shows us what should be and what is.
> There is no fantasy or sugar coating in God's Word. But it forces us to pay attention to our true hope....God Himself. So what is reality? The seasons of our life are brought by the sovereign hand of God to exercise our faith. They are not all good things but they all work together for good, for our good.
> Medicine...poisons put together in a way that they work for good.
> God is leading us through a difficult world. The actions of men are from the hand of God. Life if like a puzzle. Some pieces are not very pretty but the picture is not complete without all of them.
> Contrary to the culture...better to be in the house of mourning than the house of laughter. We are to hold our death before us because it will make us act with more wisdom than we otherwise would.
> There is a time to laugh but we are not to lose ourselves in it.
> We need to make the right use of sorrow. It is alright to be depressed if we are depressed about the right things.
> What is wisdom? v. 13-14
> In the day of adversity consider...
> This is wisdom.
> We don't know from one moment whether it will be up or down. It is all in God's hands. The doctrine of God's sovereignty is our wisdom.
> What can we do about it? We can't straighten what He has bent!
> Four lessons:
> 1. God given wisdom is a shelter.
> Wisdom is compared to an inheritance in this passage. It means wisdom is as good as an inheritance. Wisdom is far greater in passages. Wisdom is protection to those who see the sun. Wisdom is a protection like the shade or inheritance is a protection to those who have it. It is a limited comparison. Very limited. Wisdom here is being compared to these things not being coupled with them.
> Wisdom is a possession. Wisdom is given. It lies outside of ourselves. God gives wisdom. We can not make it through the dark seasons of life with our wisdom and reasoning. It brings comfort. God's sovereignty is our wisdom and it brings comfort and protection. We must USE it to benefit from it. It brings peace and comfort. It lightens our burdens and brings us joy. It brings relief for the future. If we are resting in, trusting in God's sovereignty shouldn't that be apparent to others? It is to be seen in the life.
> Wisdom is to consider the work of God...who can straighten what He has bent? He is the one doing the bending!
> God has made the day of prosperity as well as the day of adversity.
> We are to use wisdom (God's sovereignty) especially in the dark providences of our lives.
> Prov. 8:11
> Prov. 8:34-36
> Be still and know that I am God....
> He brings these things so that we will know that He is God...not us.
> Psalm 74:17???
> 1 Cor. 10:13 God doesn't take the temptation or trial alway.
> God also allows us to suffer the consequences of not using His wisdom.
> The difficulties that come our way come by the hand of God to teach us more about His sovereignty.
