Marsha's Musings: My Quiet Time: God's Will For Your Life

My Quiet Time

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV)

This set of verses is another area that many Christians including myself have trouble applying.

Rejoice always.  Do I rejoice always?  I'm afraid I am quick to complain things don't go right.  Just ask my family or read down through my Facebook posts.  Goodness!  I can be negative!

So when things do go wrong, how are we to rejoice always?  Instead of focusing on what is wrong, we need to focus on what is right!  Okay, so you just got griped at for something that wasn't your fault.  Do you dwell on that one thing to the exclusion of all that is right in your life, like the fact that you have others in your life you love you?

Pray without ceasing. Does this mean we are on our knees all the time?  No. That would impractical.  It means that our mind frequently turns to prayer throughout our day.  We pass by an accident.  We pray for those involved.  Someone bugs us a lot and is a real irritation.  We pray for them. And so it goes through the day.

Give thanks in all circumstances for this is the will of God for you.  This goes along with the one that says rejoice always.  I have been asked, "How can I be thankful when I don't feel thankful?  Isn't that living a lie?"  No. Giving thanks is something that you do with your will.  You don't have to feel thankful to give thanks.  The command is to GIVE thanks not BE thankful.  We can do that.  When we GIVE thanks in spite of our feelings, this is pleasing to God and eventually, we  will find ourselves actually being thankful.

Want to know the will of God for your life?  This is it!  Now get to it!  :-)
