Marsha's Musings

Sitting here at the Kennewick Public Library while my husband is in a meeting.  I really don't mind coming here, although I have been travelling so much lately, that I would like to have stayed at home to get some things done.  However, this is a nice break from the pressing needs of the household chores.  It affords me some time to think, read, and just be quiet.  I need times like that.  I really should schedule some time like this into each week where I just leave the house and do some quiet reflection, reading and such.

Today I started to work on some goal setting, but realized, I really should read my Bible first and reflect on it before I dive into other things on my agenda.  So I'm starting the book of Colossians today.  Here are a couple verses that I came across in my reading.

These verses peaked my attention because our pastor just preached a sermon on the hope we have in Christ.

Colossians 1:5-6  For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:

There are several observations I can make here:

1. The hope is laid up for us~me and you personally
  •       2 Peter 1:4 says it is reserved in heaven for us. Last week I flew to CA and back.  My spot on the airplane was reserved for me and only me. I had to show I.D. to prove the reservation was mine. Our hope is an inheritance, it says in 2 Peter 1:4.  This inheritance is reserved for us and only us.
2. The hope is laid up in heaven
  • This hope (inheritance) is kept safe for us in heaven where moth or rust will not corrupt it, nor thieves will break in and steal it.  Matthew 6:19-20
3. We learn about this hope in the "word of truth of the gospel"
  • We learn about this hope of our inheritance in the Bible.  If we never pick our Bibles up to read about it, we are in danger of losing our focus on this inheritance, this prize we look forward too.  We are in danger of getting our focus off on worldly things if we never pick up our Bibles to read what God has reserved in heaven for us.
4. The hope brings forth fruit
  • When we stay focused on this hope of our inheritance in heaven, it will cause us to be fruitful for God here on earth by causing us to see by faith what is really important in life.
It is so easy to get distracted with this business of living down here and forget  about what is reserved for us in heaven!  As I think about this, I realize I have so much clutter in my life that really is just excess baggage that I have to haul around or work around in this journey toward my heavenly inheritance.  Really, do I need all this junk?  It's is distracting me from things that really matter.
