Hebrews 8:6-13
Feb. 17, 2013
Review: Writer of Hebrews is talking to Hebrew Christians who were persecuted and tempted to fall back into their old ways.
The temple was still there and sacrifices were still being offered. It was tempting to not want to leave this way.
It is applicable to us in that we can see the truth from the Old Testament and how it is integrated with the New Testament.
Nature of Christ:Man & God; Prophet, Priest & King
Necessity of Christ's sacrifice
Necessity of Living by faith
Be deligent
Consider
Come boldly
Go on to perfection
2:17 He purged our sins as our priest~Most High Priest!
He was Son of Judah and under Old Testament law he could not be a priest because he was not from the tribe of Levi! He is a priest after the order of Melchisidec. He is the only one and the only one sufficient unto salvation. Gen 3
The author of Hebrews wants us to understand the covenant completely. Heb. 8:10-11 is a direct quote from Jeremiah 31:33.
The author brings us to a detour. Covenant theology in a nutshell:
1. The covenant of redemption
The agreement between the triune God that He would redeem a people Psalm 110; Isa 42:1;
2. The covenant of works
It begins at the beginning of the Bible and is derived from creation. The meaning of life is in the first three chapters of Genesis. God created a world of order and established purpose for those things he created. The Sabbath was part of that order. God blessed it and made it holy. Gen 1:28 man was to be fruitful and have dominion over the earth...this is our purpose...to take care of His creation. To tend it and cherish it. Gen. 2:15 man was put in the Garden to dress it and to keep it. God provided everything that was needed for the work.
The negative aspect to the covenant of works Gen. 2:16...do not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. On the day that you eat of it you will die. Being obedient~all the blessings of God. Disobedience~death.
Romans 5:12-21 we are all under a covenant of works because we were created to work.
We must deal with the curse of the broken covenant of works. We live under the covenant of works...it is eternal.
3. The covenant of grace
The covenant of eternal life to those who are in Christ and have their sins forgiven by Him. Those found in Christ have the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ. Christ is upholding creation, has kept all the law of Moses, and He died for our sin. It is found in Genesis 3 as well. v 15 of chapter three is the promise of the covenant of grace. The promise was the Seed...Jesus.
1. Recall that the covenant of grace in the Bible is from beginning to end. It is by faith in the promised Seed. We should not divide our Bible in two parts when it comes to salvation. Beginning to end it is salvation by faith and salvation is of God alone.
2. The law of Moses that we will look at in great detail is part of the covenant of grace. Lev. 18:5
Hab. 2:4 The covenant of works is still there and we will be judged by it. It is only by the covenant of grace that we can find righteousness.
Rev. 21 Alpha and Omega~I will be his God and they shall be my people~ almost a direct quote from Jeremiah.
Rev. 22 The Bride is the church. They come through the foolishness of preaching. All who come through faith will take of the water of life freely. We will be judged in His righteousness.

But none of these things move me, (not knowing what shall befall me v. 23) neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. (Acts 20:24 KJV)
God is faithful. None of these things move me...that I might finish my race with joy...and testify to the gospel of the grace of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 12:9; Acts 20:24 Coram Deo~Living Before the Face of God
