1. Man's heart is the source of his punishment.
v. 23 "God gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts..."
The temptation does not come from the power of the object. The temptation comes from within. Lusts of our own hearts. All men are in this condition. Christians have just been plucked out of that condition.
The sinner is given over to his own heart to do those things he wants to do. No one is making him sin and he is culpible for it.
Being given over to the lust and greed for money, power and recognition is its own punishment. There is never enough. The satifsfaction isn't there. It's a revelation of the wrath of God. Discontentment is the punishment.
Phil 19 (what chapter)
v. 28 God gave them over to a depraved mind to do those things....all sorts of evil listed there! All these things are their own punishment. No comfort to be had in those things. The sins in this list come from the heart of man.
The Gospel is for a rebellious people, not the righteous. He came to save the spiritually sick, not the well.
The wrath of God is revealed through people who trust in their own hearts.
In our day it's the height of wisdom to be true to yourself. To fulfill your own dreams.
Satan told Eve she would be like God....she would know good and evil....Man today makes his won determination about good and evil. Man makes himself to be God and judge just like Satan told Eve in the Garden.
There is no escape from this condition except through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. That is why Paul was eager to preach it. The only hope man has is the mercy of God through Christ.
Romans 9:15-18 How can anyone be saved from this condition? Because God sovereignly reaches out and brings sinners to Himself. It is the only way. Men in this condition will not choose God unless God chooses to make him willing to come.
Man is not the active agent in salvation. It's God's Gospel and He acts on sinner's hearts. Paul did not preach the Gospel so man will act. He preached the Gospel so God will act on men's hearts. It is the means that He has ordained to bring sinners to Himself.

She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." (Matthew 1:21 ESV)
God is faithful. None of these things move me...that I might finish my race with joy...and testify to the gospel of the grace of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 12:9; Acts 20:24 Coram Deo~Living Before the Face of God
