Devotion: Our Purpose

For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls. (1 Peter 2:21-25 NASB)

How often do we hear the invitation to come to Christ with promises of how He will fix all your problems and make everything wonderful for you? How many souls have walked the isle believing that coming to Christ would fix their trouble and then they later fall away disillusioned?

My father always said that when a person comes to Christ that is when the trouble starts. I appreciate his candidness. Jesus said we need to count the cost of following Him.

The verses above tell us the purpose for which God has called us. We have been called to die to sin, live to righteousness, take insults for our faith and entrust ourselves to God who judges righteously.

It's quite a bit different than what many preachers preach.

Have you counted the cost? Are you living up to the purpose to which God has called you?
