At church we are now in John 18 where Jesus is being tried and sentenced to death. The thing that struck me is that we tend to focus on the terrible things that people did to Him and how He was mistreated.
Our pastor pointed out that God was in control the whole time. Jesus predicted that He would die. He predicted that he would be handed over to the Gentiles and He predicted what kind of death he would die...a Roman crucifixion. If he had died at the hands of the Jews He likely would have been stoned to death instead of crucified. But everything happened just as He said it would.
He was in sovereign control of all the events that led up to his trial and all of the events that took place at the trial and during the crucifixion, and His truth was not hindered at all in the process.
Today, God is in sovereign control of all the events that happen in our world. Our president may be making attacks on religious ministries that offer medical care by mandating that they offer contraception and abortion pills against their consciences, and he may succeed in getting many of them to shut down as a result by levying heavy fines upon them, but the truth of the Gospel will not be hindered by this. God is in control and God will use the wicked actions of men to accomplish His purposes in this world.
So take heart! It may look bad to us and it may not be comfortable for Christians in the future, but God is still on the throne and His purposes will still be carried out even if He must use the wicked of actions of men to bring His purposes about.
Man may think he is getting the last laugh....but God will have His way in the end. We can take comfort in this!
