The Psalmist is talking to God in verse 7. He is our hiding place. He will preserve our souls from trouble, but He doesn't necessarily preserve us physically from trouble here on earth. Those who teach that if we have enough faith God will preserve us physically/emotionally from trouble here on earth are sadly mistaken.
8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye
It appears the speaker changes in verse 8 and now God is speaking. I just realized this verse can be taken two different ways. Until today I always thought it meant that God was going to tell me which way I should go...what path to be on. But as I was reading it today, it came across that God will teach me and instruct me on the path that I am on and will guide me in it. It brings to memory what the servant of Abraham said when he went to find a wife for Isaac.
[KJV] Genesis 24:27The servant was already on the path ("in the way") and the Lord led him. Is the path that we are on honoring to God? Scripture says to do all things to the glory of God. Can we glorify God on the path we are currently on? If so, then keep on moving and the Lord will lead and guide you in it. If you can't glorify God on the path you are currently on, then get off it and get "in the way" where you can glorify God and then the Lord will guide and direct you in it.
And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master's brethren.
