Hidden Treasures: Making Gods

Today I read Exodus 32 where Moses is up on the mountain with God and the people demand of Aaron that he make them a god since they don't know what has become of Moses.  Aaron pleases the people by making the golden calf and then had the audacity to tell Moses later that he just threw the gold in the fire and out came this calf. How absurd is that?

The take home lesson for me in this, is the fact that we are a people of weakness and passions.  We are easily swayed by error. We need to be on guard that we don't make gods of our imaginations to worship instead of worshipping the one True God.  It's so easy to allow things, people or agendas to take the place of God in our lives.  But the most dangerous thing is to mold God into what we want Him to be in our imagination instead of letting God be God as he is revealed in Scripture.

I know many who insist that God is a God of love but don't want to hear or accept that God also is a God of justice and wrath.  The God that they manufacture would never allow anyone to end up in Hell (which means, by the way, that heaven will be full of unrepentant sinners....won't be much different than what we live with now if that be the case.)

Let's be careful that we take our ideas about God to the bar of Scripture and see if they are right.  This means looking at Scripture as a whole and not just cherry picking the verses that support our view.
