Devotional: Stars

There is much talk about stars these days.  The word can be taken to mean different things.  In one sense it can refer to stars in the night sky and in another sense it can refer to people, such as Hollywood stars.

People often look to the stars in the heavens for guidance in their lives and they look to Hollywood Stars for someone to emulate.

I saw a quote recently by Dante Alighieri that said, "Follow your own star."

The Bible talks about stars.  Let's take a look.

We see in the books of Numbers that there was a Star prophesied to come.

I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.  Numbers 24:17
Jesus was that Star prophesied of here.  If you look at the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1 you will see that Jesus descended from Jacob.

So Jesus was born in Bethlehem and the wise men saw His star in the east and followed it to where the Christ child was and they worshiped Him.

Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.  Matthew 2:2,7,9-10

In the last book of the Bible, Revelation, we see this statement from Jesus:

I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. Revelation 22:16

What star will you follow?   Will it be the stars in the sky?   Will you find a Hollywood Star to emulate?  Will you follow your own star?  Or will you follow Jesus, the bright and morning star?

If you follow the astrological stars to determine your future, you will be led down a dead end path to destruction. Proverbs 16:25 says,  "There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." If you follow a Hollywood Star, you will be following the same path as those following the astrological stars.  If you follow your own star, well, the Bible says in Jeremiah 17:10,  "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" That leads to the same result as the first two stars mentioned.

Follow Jesus, the bright and morning star.  This Star is the only way to Life.  His way does not lead to a dead end path.  Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

Make sure you are following the right Star this Christmas season and always.
