(NIV)
This verse is a benediction to Paul's second epistle to the Corinthians. It is often used as benedictions in churches today.
Something that is unique about this verse is that it includes all the members of the triune God. It mentions the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and it is assumed that the reference to God must mean God the Father since the other two members of the trinity are mentioned by name. It is a common thing when referring to God the Father to shorten it up and just say God.
Here we see the equality of Jesus, the Holy Spirit and God the Father as they are all included in this benediction together. We see the love of the Father in sending Jesus to die in our place for our sin. We see the grace of Jesus Christ in that He laid down His life for us and we see the fellowship that the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, gives us with God the Father when He draws us to Himself in saving faith.
I love the way my previous pastor puts it.
The Father's Work ~ Redemption Planned
The Son's Work ~ Redemption Accomplished
The Holy Spirit's Work ~ Redemption Applied
Have you experienced the grace of Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit in your life? If not, the book of John in the New Testament is a great place to start to learn more about why Jesus came and how it applies to you.
