What is God's Will for Me?
by Marsha Iddings
John 4:34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.Jesus' purpose was to do the will of the Father and finish his work. His will was for Jesus to take the punish for our sin on the cross and finish that work of redemption on our behalf. Jesus accomplished the will of the Father. John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.Jesus died and rose again victorious over the grave and death. Our faith would be in vain were it not for this!
As believers, our goal should be the same as Christ's in that we are to do God's will and finish the work that He has given us to do. You might ask, "What is God's will? What is the work that I am to finish?" Good questions! Below are some verses that address what God's will is. As you read the Bible, you will find directions for Christian living. These are also the will of God for you. You can not know the will of God outside of the Bible.
Many people search for "God's will" for their lives. They refer to things like: What college should they go to? What should they major in? Where should they work or live? What should their vocation be? etc. However, if you concentrate on doing the things in these verses then you will be in God's will.
Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.So we see that "finding God's will" for our lives is not some big mysterious thing that we have to pray about and search for. It's clearly revealed in the Bible.
Ephesians 6:5-7 Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:
1Thessalonians 4:3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
1Thessalonians 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
1Peter 2:15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
1Peter 3:17 For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.
1Peter 4:19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.
1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
Do you wonder what work God would have you to do? What is the nearest thing at hand that needs to be done? That is God's work for you to do and you are to do it for His glory. Many people have the idea that they must be involved in some ministry to be doing God's work. Not true. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, "...whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." Everything you do, if it is done to the glory of God and with a conscience toward God is God's work. It is what He has put before you to do.
I hope that this has helped give you a sense of what God's will and work is for your life.
