Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Jesus is called Counselor. When I have read or heard messages on this name of Christ, it is usually used in relation to Him being our comforter, or One Who gives us counsel through His Word for our daily lives. This is very true. He does give us counsel and comfort. But there is another meaning to the name Counselor.
A counselor can also be a defense attorney in a legal court of law. A defense attorney is an advocate between you and the judge. Jesus defends us like a lawayer before the bar of God's justice, offering Himself as a payment for our sins.
1John 2:1-2 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
1Timothy 2:5-6 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
Revelation 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
Satan is the accuser. He seeks to defeat us by accusing us before God. But as we have seen in the verses above, Jesus stands to defend us before the justice of God on the basis of His own sacrifice and payment for our sin.
We have a defense attorney, a legal counselor Who has paid the debt of our sin for us and now defends us in the court of God's justice. His name is Counselor!
