Devotional: Familiar Spirits & Wizards

Isaiah 8:19 And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?

God takes a dim view of those who consult with the spirits of the dead and those who make use of them.

Leviticus 19:31 Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

Leviticus 20:6 And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.

It is a serious sin in God's eyes to consult with those who communicate with the spirits of the dead. The question is this: Should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living?

Marsha,
How do you respond to people who believe that their dead loved ones are still "around" watching over them?

Thanks,

This is something that I really don't have a good answer for. When dealing w/ the bereaved, we need to be sensitive to them, yet we should try to gently bring them to the truth God is the one who is watching over them in the sense of being the Provider & Protector.
There is a verse in Hebrews that does indicate that those who have gone on before us are watching us, but not in the sense of watching over us in a protective way, but rather in the sense that they are watching to see how we live, if we will be faithful. IT's verse 1 of Hebrews 12 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,... That is something to think about.
