Consider #3 (in answer to our question: what is an unbridled tongue?): An unbridled tongue gossips.
Remember, James is speaking of those who consider themselves religious.
Just like slander is disguised by zeal and concern for others…
So gossip is disguised by zeal and concern for others.
Many there are who must share a concern about so and so – so that we can pray for them.
There are legitimate reasons to bring up certain circumstances regarding others for prayer…
And these occasions can also easily turn into gossip.
Many prayers meetings easily turn into gossip and even slander…as issues in the church are brought up for prayer.
The one with the unbridled tongue is the one who is habitually doing these things.
There is a difference between real matters for prayer…and dirty laundry (not everything needs to be spoken!).
Many things are not profitable to speak of…and much of what is spoken by the one with the unbridled tongue is gossip.
Many times the one with the unbridled tongue asks many questions of how your spiritual life is going…they are simply gathering information in which to share with others about you.
Pr 20:19 He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets;
The person with the unbridled tongue loves to gossip and spread strife and give their opinion…and share the secrets of others.
The unbridled tongue is a gossiping tongue.
Romans 1 “Being filled with a all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful…
1 Timothy 5:13 “they go around from house to house; and not merely idle, but also gossips and busybodies, talking about things not proper to mention.”
