Devotional: Asa's Prayer in Distress

2 Chronicles 14:11 And Asa cried unto the LORD his God, and said, LORD, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O LORD our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O LORD, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee.

I love this prayer of Asa. There are several things here that we can observe.

1. When we are in distress, we can cry out to God.
It is better to cry out to God than to run to man for sympathy for our woes. When we run to man for sympathy it leaves us vulnerable to self-pity unless the person we share our troubles with is a godly person who will point us back to God and how we should respond to our troubles.

2. When in distress we need to focus on God's power.
Asa states the facts: It's is nothing with God to help. God can help with many or with them that have no power. What a comfort this is! This can give us great comfort whether we apply it to what is happening in our government and nation or if we apply it to our own personal lives when we are physically weak and have no power. God's power is perfected in weakness.2 Corinthians 12:9 And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me."

3. When in distress we need to rest on the Lord.
Ps 37:7 ¶ Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.
Resting implies patience. One who is fretting, and worrying over his circumstances is not resting and is not waiting patiently for Him to carry out His perfect will. Resting in the Lord does not imply, however, just sitting around doing nothing. We need to do what needs to be done, but leave what we can't control up to God and rest in His providence.

Are you in distress today? Cry out to God with your trouble. Focus on His power and rest in Him for the outcome.
