Devotion: This is My Beloved Son, Hear Him

This is My Beloved Son, Hear Him

By Marsha Iddings

Luke 9:35  And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

Our verse comes in the context of Luke 9:28-36 where Jesus and three of his disciples have gone up to a mountain to pray and Moses and Elijah appear there with Jesus.  The disciples wanted to make three tabernacles, one for Jesus, Moses and Elijah.  In essence, they were making Moses and Elijah equal to Jesus and God suddenly interrupts them and says, "This is my beloved Son; hear him."  And when they look around, they see only Jesus.

God does not want us giving equal devotion to anyone but Jesus Christ.  We are to hear Him.  This doesn't mean that God does not have his messengers that teach and preach His Word.  But it does mean that they need to be teaching God's Word and God's Word alone, not their own  doctrines.

We are not to set any human or angel up on a pedestal.  We are to measure everything we are being taught by what the Bible teaches.

The Bible tells us in Act 17:11 " These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so."

They didn't just take the teacher's word, but they went home and searched the scriptures to be sure that what they were being taught matched up to it.  We are to follow their example.

When the teaching we hear does not line up with what the Bible has to say, then we need to seek to clarify what we heard to be sure we heard correctly.  One who teaches contrary to what the Bible teaches has no authority and we should seek to find one who teaches God's Word faithfully and put ourselves under their authority.

"This is my beloved Son; hear Him."
