Marsha's Musings: Praying Mantis

My daughter and I had an interesting encounter with a Praying Mantis. I thought maybe I could get it to sit on my finger like I did the Dragon Fly a couple weeks ago. When I put my finger down in front of it, it suddenly jerked back, flared it's front legs back to reveal two black spots on it's inner legs that looked like big eyes. It puffed out its body and flared its wings and it hissed at me! I was so surprised! We tried to get some photos of it doing this, but we were not successful. Sarah's camera was new and she didn't know how to use it yet. I kept pestering the Mantis trying to get it to repeat the pose, but it finally got angry and ran up my daughter's pant leg like it was going to attack her. I continued to terrorize it and it jumped on her hand. She nearly dropped her camera! After it was on the ground again, it turned on me and threatened to run at me. We finally decided we were stressing it too much and left it alone. But I had no idea they were so aggressive toward things that are so much bigger than they are. Then when I was searching the Internet for a photo of one, I came across a photo of a praying mantis eating a humming bird! That about made me sick. Now I am not sure I like them so much.
