Marsha's Musings:Accused of not being able to think for myself

I responded to a person recently who was advocating marriage licenses for same sex unions. He said that it was only the religious people who were making a stink about it and he had some unsavory things to say about religious people trying to legislate their morality on everyone else.

My response was simply a quotation from Romans 1. If you are not familiar with Romans 1, I would encourage you to read it.

It made this person mad that I did not give my own opinion on his post instead of quoting from "some ancient document" that had no authority in his eyes. He went on to discredit the Bible and to defame my character for not giving my own opinion. He said that I could not think for myself.

I got to thinking about his comment. It was meant to insult me. But the more I thought about it, I began to take it as a compliment. After all doesn't Scripture tell us to have the mind of Christ?
Philippians 2:5-10 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

And doesn't Scripture teach us to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ?
2Co 10:4-6 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

As a Christian, I am not to be conformed to this world. However, they want me to conform to their standard of thinking. Scripture says:

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the
renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and
perfect, will of God.

So it seems to me that this person who accused me of not being able to think for myself was right. As Christians, we are supposed to be becoming more and more Christlike in our actions as well as our thoughts, and this includes our worldview and morality. It must all conform to the Word of God and His Son.

Romans 8:29 ¶ For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

You know, this is exactly what I've been thinking! In the world today, we are encouraged to "be our own person" and "think for ourselves", so the thought that we are not thinking for ourselves seems to be a disgrace. And they get angry when we quote scripture. I like to say, "Look, I didn't come up with that, God did. That's what the Bible says, don't get upset with me." Thank you for your thoughts and also for the comment left on my blog. It really encourages me. I have many friends, family & colleagues that are from the LDS church, so it's true that knowing about what they believe is one of my interests. Honestly, it intrigues me how much their doctrine is Biblically based, but switched around to eliminate the truth. However, 99% truth with 1% lie is still a lie.
