Devotional: The Blindfold

The Blindfold
by Marsha Iddings

Hebrews 11:1 ¶ Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Our speaker at church said that faith is trusting when you can not see. I was looking forward to a minor surgical procedure the next day. I was having to exercise my faith that God knew what He was doing and that whatever the outcome was from this was all in His good purposes. I had to trust when I could not see the outcome.

I thought I had learned the lesson from the sermon well and was struggling to put it into practice, but God wanted to make it especially practical for me. A lesson I will not soon forget.

When I arrived for the surgical procedure, thankfully, I was sedated already. But just for good measure, I was offered more sedation, which I gratefully accepted. Just before the doctor began the procedure, he told me that he would need to take my glasses off and that he would be giving me a special pair of "glasses" to wear to protect my eyes from the bright lights he would be using. It was basically a blindfold. It was a soft black cloth with foam cushion and elastic around the back of the head. So there I was blindfolded. I could not see. All I could do was trust.

I could feel the pulling, and pushing, hear the grinding, drilling, scraping sounds and feel the water dripping down my cheek and neck. But I could not see, I could only trust.

Many times it's like that in life. God allows difficulties into our lives and we can not see what He is trying to accomplish. It's like having a blindfold on and not being able to see what it is God is working to accomplish through the difficulties. Yet, God asks us to have faith in Him. He tells us to trust Him when we can not see. Can you do that?
