Race Car Drafting

                                                                           Race Car Drafting
                                                                                                 by Marsha Iddings

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

In the world of NASCAR racing there is a technique called drafting.  This can be a good thing or it can be a bad thing depending on how it is used, but I would like to focus on the good part of drafting and how it is a good example of what we need to be doing as Christians and how we need each other.

When a race car travels at a high rate of speed it has the resistance of the air hitting it in front, and it forms a vacuum behind the car. This slows the car down. In NASCAR, there are several racers from the same team in a race.  These team-mates need each other and they work together  so one of their team can win the race.  One way that they do this is by drafting.  A team-mate will drive very close to the back of the lead car in the vacuum created by it.  This cuts the drag the lead car gets from the vacuum and the resistance the second car gets from the air hitting it in front.  As a result both race cars are able to go faster together then they could if they were apart.  The drafting team-mate is helping the lead car to stay in the lead this way.

I see a parallel to the Christian life in the drafting technique of NASCAR racers.  They need each other to help keep up their speed and stay ahead of the pack.  The drafting racer is encouraging and helping the lead racer along in his race for the win.  In a similar way, we as Christians need each other.  The Christian life is not a solo effort.  There are times when we need our "team-mates" to come along and draft behind us to encourage us along the way when we might be getting discouraged and losing momentum.  There are also times when we need to be drafting behind another Christian brother or sister to help them along when they are needing encouragement.  In NASCAR, if the members of a team all decided they were going to do a solo act and try to out-do each other, they probably wouldn't get a win for their team.  They need each other and must work together and so do we.

Can you think of someone today that needs a drafting partner in their walk with God?  Pick up the phone to encourage them or write them an encouragement note today.  Let them know you are praying for them and ask if there is anything specific that you can pray about.  Do you need a drafting partner?  Communicate that need to a fellow Christian so that they can come along side in your time of need.  Let's encourage one another today.

Dear Father, Thank you for the lessons You teach me in everyday things.  You know my love for the races and I thank you that I can learn from it.  In Jesus' Name, Amen.
