Priesthood of the Believer

Numbers 18:7 ...I have given your priest's office unto you as a service of gift...

Look at this phrase, "I have given your priest's office unto you as a service of gift..." The NKJV renders it this way: "I give your priesthood to you as a gift for service..." The Old Testament priesthood was a gift from God to a select group of men for the service of God and His people.

In the New Testament we see a similar thing:

1 Peter 2: 5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

Those whom God has chosen to save are a holy, royal priesthood. It is conferred on us as a gift, similar to the Old Testament priests. Not only that, it is for service to our God and others. Think for a minute about the things the priests had to do in their duties around the temple. It wasn't glamorous. They had to kill the animals for sacrifice. They had to clean up the mess it made. It wasn't a pretty job, nor did it smell very nice. Yet, the priesthood was conferred on them as a gift for service. They were serving God and the people. Everything they did as priests was to glorify and bring honor to God. It was all designed to emphasize the holiness of God and point to the ultimate sacrifice for sin to come, Jesus Christ.

Now, think about your calling. Are you a wife, homemaker, mom, homeschool teacher, a student, a blue collar worker, a professional or something else? If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you are also a priest. The position of priest is a gift of God for service to Him and others. Everything we do should be to honor and bring glory to God. Some of us have callings that are not necessarily glamorous! But it should revolutionize the way we think about it and the way we do it if we remember that our priesthood is a gift for service to "shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:" If we do what we are called to in a way to bring glory to God, it will change our whole perspective and attitude toward what we do. 1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Dear Father, In the drudgery of the daily grind, it is so easy to lose sight of this truth. Help us to remember our calling and why You have put us here on this earth. In Jesus Name, Amen.
