Hebrews 13:5-6 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."
So we may boldly say: "The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?"
The apartment was filthy. The walls were unpainted, and there were cobwebs and spiders in every corner. I opened the drawers and they were filled with filth. There was only one sink in the entire place, no place for a stove or refrigerator. It was dark and I saw a rat dart behind an uncovered pipe next to the wall. It was in a new town far from friends or family and this was where we were going to live now. I broke down and started to cry uncontrollably. Then I suddenly woke up and found myself in my bed in our home here in Clarkston. I was so relieved to be in this place! I have thought of that dream several times this past week when I have been discontented with something about our home and it never ceases to bring a renewed sense of gratefulness for what I have.
Even if we were to loose our possessions for some reason, the verse above says that the Lord is really all we need....He will never leave us nor forsake us and that is reason to be content with what we have. He will be our helper no matter what the circumstances are! The Apostle Paul found himself in a lot of bad situations. 2 Corinthians 11:26 in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; Yet in all of this he was able to say, "Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content:" ( Phippians 4:11). The Apostle Paul also said, " Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content." (1Ti 6:6-8)
How is your attitude? Do you have an attitude of gratitude? Are you content with what you have? Take some time out to think of the alternative. How much worse could your circumstances be than they are right now? Give God thanks for what He, in His providence, has provided for you right now. Give thanks that He will never leave you nor forsake you no matter what comes your way. It is an act of faith to give thanks when things are not going the way you think they should. It is a testimony to the world when God's people do this.
Dear Father, Thank You for a poignant reminder to be grateful for what you have provided for me. Help me to give thanks even in the face of seemingly bad circumstances because You have said You would never leave me nor forsake me. Amen
