God's View of Complaining

Numbers 11:1 Now when the people complained, it displeased the LORD; for the LORD heard it, and His anger was aroused. So the fire of the LORD burned among them, and consumed some in the outskirts of the camp.

Complaining is so easy to do! We have all done it at one time or another. But I was convicted as I read this of how terrible complaining is in the sight of God. He was so displeased with the Israelites for complaining that he burned among them and consumed some of them!

Complaining is a grevious sin against God's sovereignty. When we complain we are in essence showing that we don't believe what God is doing is right or that we believe He is not really in control of things.

What kind of message do we send to others about our trust in God's sovereign control when we complain? I don't know about you, but this is very sobering to me. I hope will remember this the next time I am tempted to complain about my lot in life.

Dear Father, You are merciful and kind. If you struck everyone dead who complained, there would not be a soul alive on the earth. Yet, because you restrain Your hand, it does not mean you condone our actions. Forgive me for my complaining attitude. Amen.
